Evolution Of Overband Magnetic Separators

The basic concept of magnetic separators lies in their use of magnetic properties of one material to separate ferrous impurities from other materials. The concept was first innovated by Orange F. Merwin, who used a plain magnetic plate for separation of ferrous impurities. This was particularly popular amongst farmers in the 1940s, as it proved very useful for eliminating metallic impurities from grains.

Magnetic separators work on the basic principle of varying magnetic properties of different constituents. The way a ferrous material reacts to the magnetic field around it, is different from the way plastic, wood, or glass would react to the same. This simple, yet useful, functionality of magnetic separators led to a good amount of research and development of their functionalists. In addition, this has made them an essential component of many large, as well as small-scale, industries.

Magnetic separators can also be used to sort various types of metals, by employing a series of separators, varying in intensity, to pull out strong and weak magnetic materials, at different times. There are different types of magnetic separators available in the market, such as:
  • Permanent magnetic separators
  • Overband magnetic separators
  • Single and double drum type magnetic separators
  • Magnetic ferrous traps
  • Plate and hump magnetic separators
  • Magnetic coolant filters
  • Magnetic pulleys and grids
  • Suspension magnetic separators

Overband magnetic separators, also known as cross-belt magnetic separators, are one of the most useful and common types of magnetic separators, used in various industries, related to cement, food, fertilizers, chemicals, plastics, coal handling, thermal power etc. They are also employed in various recycling plants to separate metal scrap from the clutter, in the most efficient manner.

Cross belt magnetic separators are easy to use, and can be suspended conveniently, either parallel or perpendicular to the material flow over the conveyor belts and feeders, through eye bolts. These magnetic separators automatically discard the tramp iron from the rest of the material, being carried over conveyor belts, vibratory feeders or inclined planes, and discharge it to a collection bin by the cleated belts.

Cross type magnetic separators are available with both permanent magnets and electromagnets, depending on their applications and requirements of the user. While electromagnetic separators use more power to operate, compared to permanent magnet separators, they also provide the advantage of the operation being turned off at any instance, when it becomes dangerous to keep the separator running. Besides, they don’t require maintenance frequently.

Different Models Of Plate Magnets

Plate magnets provide a dependable and economic solution of preventing metal contamination in the processing and manufacturing industry. Metal contamination is one of the commonly occurring problems that cannot only contaminate the products but also damage the machinery or equipment. Plate magnets are used in most of the industries with a ferroplate to prevent abrasion from metal contaminants. They are installed in pipes, chutes, ducts and suspended over conveyors to remove the tramp iron that can further hamper the machine performance and the product purity.

Different Models Of Plate Magnets
  • Super power- It is one of the most popular units of all. It is specially designed to remove tramp iron from several heavy-duty applications. This two-inch model can exhibit very strong magnetic field. The tapered step help to remove the tramp iron 2-3 inches deep from the material flow quite easily.
  • Maxi power- It is designed for extra heavy-duty applications. It has a magnetic field that can project into 3-4 inches of the material flow to remove both small and large pieces of tramp iron. It also has tapered step to hold out the products.
  • Brute power- It is designed to project a magnetic field into 4-5 inches deep material flow. It is designed for extremely tough tramp iron separation in applications like wood chip processing and sugar cane processing.
Besides, the ones mentioned above, the other models of Plate Magnets are rare earth and superbrute. Established in 1969, Jupiter Magnetics is a Delhi based organization engaged in the manufacturing of Industrial Magnetic Separators and Equipment. Information On Plate Type Magnetic Separators

The first use of magnets to remove ferrous impurities in an industrial environment began in the 19th century, when Orange F Merwin developed a flat magnetic product to help farmers trap ferrous contaminants from grain. Today, different types of Magnetic Separators such as Plate Type Magnetic Separator and several others are used in a number of mining sectors, scientific labs and processing industries. The size and type of the device depend on the use and requirement.

What Is A Plate Type Magnetic Separator?
In a Plate Type Magnetic Separator, Plate Magnets are used at the bottom of an inclined chute or suspended above the material on a belt conveyor or stainless steel vibrator to separate ferrous contaminants and impurities from the rest of the material. Some of the higher end models are effective in removing relatively large ferrous materials such as nuts, bolts, staples and welding rod from a dry product flow. While there are rare earth models that do a much better job on very fine or weak magnetic contaminants. Plate Type Magnetic Separators are simple and economical to install and extremely efficient in removing pieces of tramp metal from a variety of objects.

Types Of Plate Type Magnetic Separators:
  • Flush Face Magnets: When installed over the material flow, the powerful Flush Face Magnets are used to deliver continuous magnetic protection for downstream processing equipment by lifting ferrous contaminants.
  • Rare Earth Spout Magnets: Rare Earth Spout Magnets are used for removing finer ferrous particles. Located in chutes, the rare earth spout magnets capture tiny magnetic iron in dry or wet product flow. They are manufactured in two different widths to match a chute.
  • Flat Conveyor Plate Magnet: Ideal for wide conveyors, Flat Conveyor Plate Magnets come in different sizes and strengths to effectively remove tramp metal that has fallen on the conveyor.

Plate Magnets – Types And Applications

Plate Magnets are basically used for separating fine and chunky pieces of ferrous material from free flowing granular materials. They can also efficiently separate ferrous particles from moist, lumpy and powdery materials. Flexible Plate Magnets are placed below or above a conveyer belt for capturing and separating ferrous contaminants. Plate Magnets are extensively used for removing ferrous contaminants in many manufacturing industries; few of them being plastic industry, food processing industry and chemical industry.

Types And Applications Of Plate Magnets:
Spout Plate Magnet-
This type of Plate Magnet uses two types of diverters, primary and secondary, for removing ferrous contaminants. Spout Plate Magnet finds application in industries that demand heavy metal separation.

Flush Face Plate Magnet-
Flush Face Plate Magnet is mostly placed above the conveyer belt or shaft on which the material, from which the ferrous contaminant has to be removed, flows. This is done to protect the parts of the separating machine from heavy impurities.

Exposed Pole Plate Magnet-
Exposed Pole Plate Magnet comprises of two magnetic poles that attract and separate the ferrous contaminants from the material. This type of Plate Magnet is suitable for low volume applications.

Flat Face Plate Magnet-
Flat Face Plate Magnet is used in applications that involve separation of fine ferrous contaminants from the material. This type of Plate Magnet efficiently separates ferrous contaminants and keeps the separating machine and surrounding area clear of ferrous contaminants.

Tapered Step Face Plate Magnet-

Permanent Lifting Magnets Vs Electromagnets?

In an electromagnet, the magnetic field is produced due to flow of electricity and magnetic field disappears after the current is turned off. Since electromagnets are extremely powerful in nature, hence they are extensively used in various industries for lifting heavy material. There is just one disadvantage of using electromagnet i.e. the magnetic field disperses if the electricity supply is cut off. This could lead to potentially dangerous situations & workplace hazards. Therefore, nowadays many industries are opting for Permanent Lifting Magnets that are permanent in nature and do not require any kind of power supply. The utilization of Permanent Lifting Magnets in various industries is increasing due to the following advantages:
  • Permanent Lifting Magnets are cost effective. Unlike the electromagnets, they do not require any kind of power supply for functioning. Hence, they help in saving a good amount of money that is spent in generating power for operating the magnet.
  • Permanent Lifting Magnets are permanent in nature and do not stop working if the power supply is halted. This greatly helps in saving time that is required in re-starting the operations after the power supply is disrupted for a short duration of time. With Permanent Lifting Magnets, there is no such problem if the electric supply gets cut off mid-operation.
  • Permanent Lifting Magnets are easier to handle and maintain as opposed to electromagnets.
  • Permanent Lifting Magnets are generally light and compact. Therefore, they occupy less amount of space in comparison to heavy electromagnets that occupy a good amount of space and are bulky.
