1. Magnetic Separators And Their Uses

The widest application of Magnetic Separators today remains in the mining industry, even though they play a vital role in the whole industrial sector. Magnetic Separators are basically used to separate tramp iron from mixtures which are non-ferrous. They are built according to specification and application in an industry. There are different kinds of Magnetic Separators available in the market today.

Some Of These Are Mentioned Below:
  • Overband Magnetic Separators: They are a commonly used separator used in processes where conveyor belts are used. These separators are usually placed above the process stream which allows the tramp iron and other impurities to be separated from the raw material. Major application is in industries like thermal power, cement, recycling, sugar and other such industries.
  • Magnetic Pulleys: They are yet another kind of separators which is used to further rid the raw material of any contaminants. It is generally placed at the end of conveyor so that the process stream can directly come in contact with the magnet thus ensuring the purity of raw material. Major uses are in cleaning raw materials like sugar, cement and slag etc.
  • Suspension Magnet: It is yet another separator which is predominantly used in industries like coal, slag, fertilizers etc. In this process, the magnet is directly suspended over the raw material being cleaned. The tramp iron and other magnetic impurities get struck to the magnet, and the raw material gets cleaned.
  • Magnetic Coolant Filters: They are used to remove stray impurities from water based coolants. This ensures the long life of machines using these coolants and prevents any damage to it.
Here dirty coolants are rotated past a magnetic drum and the impurities get sorted.
  • Plate Magnet: It is used in food processing, mineral and tobacco industries where the impurities to be removed can be really fine. Depending upon the requirement, it can be placed above or below the conveyor belt
  • Magnetic Traps: They are best used for separation of ferrous contaminants from liquids. Thus, they help ensure product purity. They are prominently used in refineries, pump etc.

Cost and quality is a big issue for industries dealing in Magnetic Separators. Technological advancements have resulted in Magnetic Separators being built for specific applications. Magnetic Separators have become a cost effective way of maintenance of vital industrial machinery. Reduction in repair and maintenance has resulted in less wastage in productivity, thereby saving labor cost and other overhead expenses. Magnetic Separators play an important role in industrial sector today.
